Card Grading Guide: PSA vs BGS vs SGC

Everything you need to know about card grading — from understanding the grading scale to choosing the right company for your cards. Compare costs, turnaround times, and resale value impact.

What Is Card Grading?

Card grading is the process of submitting a trading card to a professional third-party authentication and grading company. Expert graders evaluate the card's condition across multiple criteria — centering, corners, edges, and surface — and assign a numerical grade on a scale of 1 to 10.

The graded card is then encapsulated in a tamper-proof plastic case (called a "slab") with a label displaying the grade, card details, and a unique certification number. This process authenticates the card and provides an objective, universally recognized condition assessment.

Why does grading matter? A graded card commands higher prices because buyers trust the objective condition assessment. A PSA 10 Gem Mint card can be worth 5-20x more than the same card in raw (ungraded) condition, depending on the card's rarity and demand.
